In Washington D.C., School Choice Works When Public Education Can’t Deliver

In our nation’s capital, the public school system faces unique challenges. And while a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t always allow children the path to success they truly deserve, the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program is stepping up to give parents the ability to make the best possible decision for their kids’ futures.

Per a recent article from Lindsey M. Burke and Max Eden for the Heritage Foundation:

The only thing that’s actually worked in Washington, D.C., has been school choice. Randomized controlled trials show that kids in the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program feel safer, learn more, and legitimately graduate more often….

Yet to skeptics, school choice is problematic because there’s not enough “accountability.” If the “accountability” they seek is metric-chasing mandates, then its absence in school-choice programs is a virtue, not a fault. But to most parents, “accountability” means having a school that’s responsive to their child’s needs. The way to make that happen is to give parents choices, which will encourage schools to pursue safety and academic quality with integrity.

My Kid’s Future believes that families should have more freedom of choice in the education of their children, both in D.C. and in all 50 states. And we want you to join us in this great effort.
